Intralesional corticosteroid injections are used to treat deep nodules or cysts. A very diluted corticosteroid is injected directly into the blemish with a tiny needle. Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory that shrinks the swollen wall of the cyst quite quickly. Over the next 24 hours, you'll notice your blemish softening, shrinking, and flattening out. While it may not completely disappear, it will be noticeably smaller and less red and painful.
KELOID OR HYPERTROPHIC SCARS
A corticosteroid solution is injected directly into a hypertrophic scar or keloid, which may help reduce its size. Steroids break the bonds between collagen fibers, which reduces the amount of scar tissue beneath the skin. Steroids also have powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce swelling, redness, itching, or tenderness.
OTHER SKIN CONDITIONS
Rashes, allergic reactions, and other skin conditions can improve with a steroid injection as well.
